Arts & Sciences Projects

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) offers a wide range of activities for many levels of interest. Inside the SCA, I primarily engage in "heavy armored" combat. I also create art pieces, drawing from both historical amateur research and imagination, which "look just about right" for the period I am inspired by.

I have settled into my SCA art career primarily with metal, appreciating its sculptural potential and its ability to be etched upon. I enjoy using a medium that can combine beauty with functionality. This page collects those efforts of all mediums and the projects completed to date, their process, and where applicable, the research behind them.

A word about my pieces, and my process, especially in the SCA context of a non-profit teaching history through many forms. On the perfection of a historically accurate recreation of a piece, and the balance we should strive for.

I use primary sources for research wherever possible, and review the acids, metals, and tools that people of the time would use. That said, when there are situations that call for safety over perfection, then I will always make the sacrifices in historic process perfection so that safety is first. (Nitric acid is scary stuff for example!)

I always do my best to think through what a person of that period would be able to accomplish themselves, what they would need to hire a professional to do, or what they would only be able to buy from a merchant.

Understanding this balance and thinking through the process while creating the various elements sets off anyone with a tiny modicum of curiosity on a fantastic hunt for further information. If you are reading these projects and have questions, I enjoy discussing, sharing, and teachin. This includes honest discussions about why I chose to create something in a non-historically accurate way, even when safety was not a concern.

My goal in creating works for the SCA is to further my skill levels as an artist while bringing beauty and functionality to our historically oriented organization.

(A.S. LIX)

I am primarily focused on exploring Roman times, so I decided to undertake building a cingulum - the belt of the Roman legionnaire.

This project has been one of the more complex projects I have undertaken in the SCA to date.

(A.S. LVII - LIX)

In the SCA we give each other credit for achievements of our friends and fellow players. One of the most common items that come with the awards are medallions, which I have been honored to make for multiple people to commemorate their achievements.

Metal cast tokens

One of the biggest achievements in the SCA is the elevation to a small peer reviewed and polled group called the Order of Chivalry. This is awarded for many reasons, though is a long path. These tokens were made for an elevation and were given out by the new member of the order to those who visited him during his ceremony.

Period metal blackening

The set of spring steel legs were beginning to rust and pit from corrosion. The owner of the armor asked that I restore the pieces, though do so in a way that would return them to a blackened state.

Shield painting

The painting of shields has been a part of shield adornment since antiquity. Materials have changed along with the mediums, though the ability to adorn our shields with our devices and group mascots brings a lot of life to the heavy combat side of the SCA.

Gladio sheath

The SCA is full of artifacts. The Novitius Gladio is for the victor of the "East Kingdom" Novice Tournament. This gladio is held for one year by the victor and would hang on a wall for many, so I wanted to bring the memorial piece out into the world more frequently with ease.

Metal Etching

The SCA has many challenges and groups to keep your skills growing. One of these is the Reaper Challenge group, 100 strikes per day at the pell for 100 days without a miss. This earns you the respect of your fellow fighters/fencers/archers, and gets you a patch worn proudly by the few. This plaque was created for a fundraiser to get future reapers their patches.
